Your Assignment:

Step 0ne

Start with researching at least 2 examples of photo-journalism. For each one identify an element and a principle of art that work effectively together, and explain how this photograph works well to tell the story. Choose form a selection of newspapers, magazines books…State all bibliographical information and include copies of the image in your submission

Step two

Each students is asked to shoot at least 20 exposures of objects or people that create an essay. Choose images with enough visual literacy to complete these compositions.

Students will shoot effective compositions that reference the elements a photographic essay:

1)        establishing shot/ overall/ opening/introductory shot

2)        the medium shot: focus on one group or activity

3)        close-up/ detail

4)        long shot

5)      portrait; dramatic, tight or environmental

6)      interaction shot: people with people or with a task

7)      sequence shot(s): how to or before, during and after

8)      signature: summarizes the situation with all the key story elements in one photo

9)        closing shots

Step three

…Then this collection of images will be used to print / create  5 finished compositions that emphasize a story or some moment in a narrative.

Step four

…an interesting tip for your brief written  explanation  of narrative within the composition….

Each of these techniques evokes the use of one if not more than one of the principles of art which may help in emphasizing a narrative.

A reflection: Make sure to address the following about your five photos: (in one page)

1. identify in your photograph a composition technique that you used

2. identify in your photograph an element of art that you used

3. identify in your photograph a principle of art that you used

4. what you learned in the process of completing the assignment.

Are there a variety of values from dark black, to grays, and white? Is the image fully developed? Is the image fully fixed? Are the white areas truly white or is there a blue/gray fade if you did black and white? Are the colors crisp and bright if you did color?

4              Effective composition (use of elements and principles)          

Balancing the whole finished composition. Good use of the rule of 1/3. Creative layout, use of visual space. Does it read well, does it have good visual flow? Is it eye catching? How well do your image tell a story?
